LIVING LEGEND

Blog By- Dr Jaya Kumar

'Sometimes you meet such people in your lives whose words touch your heart forever and become a source of motivation for you.' I experienced this at an event sometime back.
It was a day when me, my husband and our son had gone to one of the prestigious golf clubs in the city.
We had gone to witness an international golf tournament.
Top golfers from around the  world were participating to exhibit their skills for the title.
Watching their moves  closely was a great experience for us.

As we were about to leave the club after the game, I saw a glimpse of a personality that made us stop.
The person who I saw was  a tall turbaned elderly man.  Though he was aged, his face was glowing with confidence and pride.
It seemed even at the age that he was, he looked a tough competition to the people much younger to him.
He presented himself as a person who could truly be a source of inspiration for many. The person in front of us was the living legend of Indian athletics, 'The Flying Sikh'.
He was sitting in the recreation area of the club enjoying his evening with a group of his friends.
As we stood there watching him, one of the club officials  approached us to assist and asked us if we were waiting to meet someone. I instantly said yes were. I told him that we were waiting to meet the legend of Indian sports but did not wish to disturb him in the middle of the game he was enjoying with his friends.
He asked me if we knew him personally. There was no personal connection with him but I replied smilingly, 'Not only me, the whole country knows him'.
He smiled back hearing that.
My husband then, very gently, handed over his visiting card along with a note for the legend that we wished to seek his blessings for our son.
We requested the official to hand over our note to the legend himself. The official went inside the room with the note and returned soon with a message that he would come out of that formal area to meet us soon. I was eagerly waiting for him and was very excited to be with the legend himself.
Soon we saw the legend himself walking gracefully towards us.
We as a family, paid our regards to him. He too greeted us and smilingly kept his loving and strong athletic hands on my young son's head and spoke in a very gentle voice.
He said that as a child it is understood that one has to make one's parents and family be proud of oneself. But, our utmost duty and aim should be to make our country too be proud of ourself. With true dedication and firm commitment, anyone can achieve that.
Talking to us and bestowing his blessings, he gave us a mantra of life to remember. He said," Always remember to try to be a good human being and that the national pride should be our focus in our life". After spending sometime with us, he left us
with a smile and wished us lots of success and luck for the future.
Those moments became moments of pride for us. His golden words made a mark in our hearts which were memorable and to be cherished.
My son is still very young as a child, but whenever people ask him about what he wishes to become when he grows up, he always confidently and proudly replies that he only wishes to be a good human being with a vision to make the whole country proud of him.
The golden words said by and the blessings given by the living legend himself, motivated us so much that they shall remain with us in our memories forever.

The words and views expressed in my blogs are personal and are my original work of thoughts.
